Most people researching Panna come across the Colombian versus Zambian question. Colombian emerald is the most famous source and carries a premium built as much on reputation as on the stone itself. Zambian emerald, which is what we stock, typically shows a slightly deeper and more bluish green, tends to be less heavily included, and offers considerably better value per carat for the same visual quality.

Vedic astrology does not distinguish between mine sources. What matters traditionally is that the stone is natural, untreated beyond normal trade practice, and free from major cracks. On that basis a good Zambian Panna does exactly the same job as a Colombian one at a fraction of the price, which is why we source from Zambia.

Rate per carat rises with colour saturation and clarity. A 1.30 carat square Zambian Panna currently sits at Rs. 6,500 per carat, while a larger 5.80 carat oval with stronger colour sits at Rs. 10,000 per carat.

Carved pieces work the other way round. A small transparent Emerald Ganesh of 6 to 7 carats is Rs. 1,500 per carat, while a large opaque carved Ganesh weighing over 160 carats comes down to Rs. 350 per carat. The material in a big carving is denser and less transparent, so the rate per carat falls even though the total value is higher. The same logic applies to beads. How to Identify an Original Panna

The market has a great deal of glass, doublet and synthetic material sold as Panna. A few practical checks help.

• Look for the jardin. Under a loupe, natural emerald shows fine internal fissures and mineral traces. A stone with nothing inside it at all deserves suspicion.
• Check for bubbles. Round gas bubbles indicate glass. Natural inclusions are irregular and angular.
• Watch the colour. Natural Panna green is soft and slightly uneven across the stone. Uniform, electric green usually means synthetic or dyed material.
• Feel the temperature. Natural stone stays cool against the skin longer than glass.
• Ask for the certificate. This is the only check that settles the matter. A certificate from a recognised laboratory states species, origin where determinable, and any treatment.

Buy from a seller who will give you a laboratory certificate and who will let you return the stone if it does not match.
